This book was introduced to our family by a friend whose son loved it.
The story is a cumulative joke, where where the punchline gets longer and longer and includes descriptions of the coolest (spunky), smelliest (stinky), one-eyed (winky), three-legged (wonky) donkey around.
My kids have absolutely adored it. Our copy came with a CD of the song, which they have played over and over again. I can now sing the whole song in my sleep!
I found it especially helpful when Miss 4 was learning to say the /k/ sound in the middle of words. There were lots of opportunities to practice the /k/ sound in individual words (eg. donkey) and then gradually build up the length and complexity of the phrases that she could use /k/ in (eg. winky wonky donkey and then stinky dinky lanky winky wonky donkey).
The Wonky Donkey is a great book for:
- children aged between 2 and 7 years of age
- rhyming practice
- practicing /k/ in the middle of words
- teaching your children a clean joke that they can tell their grandparents
This copy of The Wonky Donkey does have the CD and the book and a donkey stuffed toy!
